The type of firewood you purchase—green, semi-seasoned, seasoned, or kiln-dried—plays an important role in determining how and where it should be stored.
Green and semi-seasoned firewood must be stored outdoors to allow proper drying. Green wood typically contains more than 45% moisture, making it unsuitable for immediate burning. We recommend allowing green firewood to season outdoors for at least six to eight months before use. Firewood is considered fully seasoned only when its moisture content drops below 20%.
Semi-seasoned firewood falls between green and fully seasoned wood and requires a similar storage approach. If you purchase semi-seasoned firewood, we can assess its moisture content prior to delivery and provide guidance on how long it should continue seasoning before burning.
To speed up the seasoning process, firewood should be stacked as soon as it is delivered. Choose a dry, well-ventilated location and consider using firewood racks to keep the wood off the ground—many of our customers find this to be the most effective solution.
Our firewood is cleaned using a tumbler to remove dirt and debris, making it safe to store near your home. That said, we recommend leaving a small gap between the firewood stack and your house to promote airflow and reduce moisture buildup.
For optimal drying:
Avoid stacking firewood directly on grass, mulch, or damp surfaces, as these retain moisture and can cause rot. If firewood becomes soft, spongy, or develops white mold, it has likely absorbed too much moisture and should not be burned—especially indoors.
Seasoned and kiln-dried firewood is clean, dry, and suitable for indoor storage. Many customers choose to store it in a garage, basement, or near their fireplace or wood stove for convenience.
When storing firewood indoors, ensure the space is dry and well-ventilated. Avoid areas with excessive moisture, such as damp basements, to maintain the wood’s quality.
If you’re unsure about the best way to store your firewood, our team is always happy to offer guidance at the time of delivery. We also provide optional stacking services for customers who prefer a hands-off experience—just let us know in advance, and we’ll take care of the rest
